The Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR) has received calls from concerned taxpayers who received letters offering to settle their large debt with the Commonwealth for a much-reduced amount. The letters further threaten the department will seize property if the taxpayer does not immediately cooperate.

Like the IRS, DOR follows a prescribed process in working with taxpayers who may owe unpaid taxes. If a taxpayer owes back taxes, DOR follows specific guidelines that escalate over time. DOR would never send a letter threatening to seize property as the first course of action.

Taxpayers should ignore these letters and call the Division of Collections at (502) 564-4921 with any questions concerning debt they may owe. If taxpayers would like to report the letter as fraud, they can call 1-800-590-3921 or visit https://login.redflagreporting.com/kentucky.
